23rd St Bartholomew’s Scout Troop
Scouting at 23rd Sarnia is a part of the worldwide Scouting organization that contributes to the physical, intellectual, social and spiritual development of youths between the ages of 11 and 15. The Scout programme at St Bart’s places a special emphasis on outdoor activities such as hiking, canoeing, and camping.
We are a large group consisting of approximately 35 youths with 11 Leaders. Although our sponsor is St Bartholomew’s Church, for reasons of space we meet at Central United Church at the corner of Brock & George Streets. Our meeting time is Wednesday evenings, 7-9pm. Our general season runs from early September through to mid-May, with the normal breaks that align with school at Christmas and March Break.
We do a fair bit of camping – 8 camps per year, including a Winter camp in January….where we sleep in tents. Hiking is incorporated into each year’s program, as is canoeing. The highlight of the Scouting program is a week-long wilderness whitewater canoe trip for the eldest Scouts at the end of their four years with us.
Most of our camping is done at the local Scout camp, Camp Attawandaron, near the Pinery on Lake Huron. However, we do camp at Camp Sylvan (near Thedford) and occasionally travel across the border to American campsites.
One aspect of Scouting that must be included is service work – each year we help out at the Salvation Army Christmas Hamper delivery, the Community Girl’s Box Lunches, Bluewater Anglers, and several other efforts. We also help serve at the Church Community Dinners.
